...SLIPPERY ROADS AND BLACK ICE POSSIBLE ACROSS MUCH OF THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS THURSDAY MORNING... Snow showers will develop across the North Carolina mountains and continue overnight. Accumulations are expected mainly at elevations above 3500 feet, but light accumulations will also be possible in the lower mountain valleys. With temperatures falling into the teens and 20s across the mountains by daybreak on Thursday, black ice and slippery road conditions are likely to develop in any locations receiving precipitation. Temperatures may not warm back above the freezing mark in some locations until the afternoon. Use extreme caution if traveling in the North Carolina mountains overnight through Thursday morning.

...SNOW SHOWERS DEVELOPING THIS EVENING ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS... .A strong cold front has moved east of the southern Appalachians this evening. Cold air is rushing in quickly behind the front, with precipitation steadily changing over from rain to snow from the high elevations first to the lower valleys overnight. Accumulations are beginning across the Smokies first, with accumulations then spreading across the rest of the higher elevations through the late evening, and down toward the valleys overnight. The snow showers will gradually taper off through the morning hours on Thursday. ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST THURSDAY ABOVE 3500 FEET... * WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with up to 6 inches above 5000 feet, and nearly 8 inches along the highest ridge tops. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph. * WHERE...Elevations above 3500 feet in the North Carolina mountain Counties along the Tennessee border. * WHEN...Through noon EST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the commute Thursday morning. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Black ice and slippery roadways will develop with very cold temperatures in the upper teens and 20s Thursday morning. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Very gusty winds will combine with cold temperatures to create wind chill values as low as 5 below zero above 3500 feet.
